Does Abuse During Childhood Correlate/lead to Substance Abuse or Addiction?

Question by Sara: Does abuse during childhood correlate/lead to substance abuse or addiction?
I’m doing a psych research project on this subject and I’m in need of some help. With addiction I was thinking of possibly covering sex addiction or addiction to work as a topic.(Victims occupy themselves with things to avoid the real problem?) Personal opinions, stories, or experiences with this subject would even be helpful. Do they take drugs b/c many drugs provide dopamine, making the victim happy? Or just a coincidence? Anything you can provide is useful. Thanks!

you would find many useful facts in a book by Richard O’Connor PhD called Undoing Perpetual Stress… he goes into your subject quite deeply.

Addiction and the Brain – drug or alcohol abuse is a disease. – Tim Brunson, PhD, talks about how the brain works regarding addictions (alcohol, drug addiction). Why does your brain respond to repeated behavior? How can you use suggestion and imagination to create an alternate reward instead of alcohol, prescription or illegal drugs?
