you have asked a lot and I will try and help as much as possible. Manhatthan is out if you are on a budget, extremely expensive to buy or rent. There are parts of Brooklyn that might work, but of course the best areas are as expensive as NY. Also some nice areas in Queens that are still on he subway. You would have to speak to a real estae broker to find out what areas are good, cheap, and safe. Each area would have good supermarkets. If you have a car you can come in to Manhattan and there are two stores, actually 2 branches of a store called Fairway which can’t be beat. Of course we also havve Zabars, not cheap, but an addiction for sort of deli food, well, not deli, but smoked fish and salads like that. Try and go during the week as the weekends are a zoo, For clothing, gee, I guess I would suggest lower Canal street, they have some cheap funky stores. Also the department stores have huge sales all the time, and you can ge 75% off of good things at Bloomies if you time it right.
Unfortunately my time of trying to live cheap in the ciy was over 25 years ago and it was possible to get cheap housing. Things have changed as have my standards along with getting a husband with enough money to get us a good expensive apartment. I wish you good luck, I would start with Brooklyn first. I still like it over there ane it’s easy to get to the city.
Oh yes, a must know for people moving to NY, for clothing, getting good bargins on expensive clothing, all reduced down to totally affordable prices and I don’t know what you are looking for — Century 21, it’s down by where the twin towers once loomed. Not sure of the address, but easy to find. A must for any one who needs to shop.’
Again Good luck.
